NHS Induction Ceremony

History of the NHS at Pinewood

One of the unique traditions at Pinewood is our annual induction of students into Pinewood’s Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). This year the ceremony took place on Friday, March 10. This long-established ceremony honors student scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Pinewood has inducted students each year since 1976.

Membership in NHS

The National Honor Society is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in the United States to recognize outstanding high school students in Grades 10-12. Membership in the NHS is both an honor and a responsibility, as students are expected to uphold the qualities not only during high school but throughout their lives. Once a member, always a member.

A special thank you to Ms. Katerina Biliouri, Content curator and TED speaker coach, for delivering the inspiring keynote speech at the NHS induction ceremony. Each of the four stories she told about her life related eloquently to each of the NHS qualities.

Pi Day at Pinewood - Secondary
Pi Day is observed on March 14 (the 3rd month) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant figures of π. Our Pinewood Math club students celebrated the day by running 9 fun Math activities, including Math taboos, drawing a perfect circle freehand and ''How many people can fit into an A4 paper?''. All grade 7-10 students participated in the event, having an opportunity to see Math in action and think critically, creatively and out of the box! The smiling faces at the end of the day indicated that Math is fun, challenging and real!
Pi Day at Pinewood - Elementary
Pi is an irrational number (a decimal with no end and no repeating pattern). In 2021, using a supercomputer, scientists calculated another 31.4 trillion digits of the constant, bringing the total up to 62.8 trillion decimal places.
To introduce the concept of this number to our younger learners, we held a Pi Day Contest. The child in each grade level (1-6) who learned the most digits of Pi would have the opportunity to throw a whipped cream pie at Ms. Mills, EY & Elementary principal.

We are so proud to present to you our winners:
Grade 1 - Vasiliki Boutatos learned 54 digits
Grade 2 - Carlos Campanale learned 35 digits
Grade 3 - Eva Gotseva learned 53 digits
Grade 4 - Petros Dampasinas learned 78 digits
Grade 5 - Lukas Branka learned 144 digits
Grade 6 - Theodoros Ioannidis learned 135 digits
Book Week
Congratulations to Ms. Helen and everyone who helped with and participated in Book Week! It was great to see the kids so excited about the activities. Our second graders even came back in from their lunch break when they heard the DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) sign! Please continue to encourage your child to check out books from the library to help us reach our goal of reading 3.000 books by the end of the school year.
Bookmark design competition
Congratulations on the Bookmark Design Competition 2023 Winners from Grades 2, 3 and 4! We are very proud of all the Elementary students for submitting their imaginative handcrafted designs, which inspired us all to get a book and start reading on World Book Day, March 2.

“Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul." - Anne Lamott

So, what are YOU reading today! #worldbookday #pinewoodcreative"
You are beautiful - Community Project
Our Grade 9 student, Maria Yaryshevskaya, created the posters below for her Community Project to support our young Pinewood girls who struggle with self-acceptance and self-esteem.

Maria describes her project as follows: "This project was created with the help of wonderful artists who expressed how women inspire us in our works. Art has always been near us to show the beauty of this world, and this beauty is you.''
Sustainability and Circularity
The Theme of Sustainability and Circularity was our main theme during our entrepreneurship week. To bring the students closer to a sustainable business focus, we invited Rania Samara, Founder of Cirkel and Anna Chlioura & Pantelis Zarkos, Co-Founders of Elektronio Wheels. They talked to us about their experience in Entrepreneurship, how they decided to embark on this journey and why they chose to focus on a business model that encompasses sustainability. The students had time to ask questions on everything and get a glimpse of how theory translates to reality. A big thank you for being so open and generous with your time Rania, Anna & Pantelis!
CAS Project - G11 Students
Our Grade 11 students, Aimilia Steiropoulou, Sotiris Anagnostakis, and Dafni Steiropoulou, volunteer weekly for 'Apostoli Anthropos', a humanitarian organization that focuses on improving the lives of the elderly by motivating elderly living in Long-Term Care Units (LTCUs) with the help of Secondary students.
The ultimate goal is to improve the daily life and quality of life of the elderly. As a team composed of different schools, the students gather every Tuesday to spend an hour sharing the various enjoyable activities they create, such as puzzles and songs. The students firmly believe that even these small actions provide important support to the elderly, improving key emotional, intellectual, and physical wellness. According to research findings, the seniors reported that the program positively affected their well-being in many ways, creating increased self-esteem and social interaction, increasing the sense of security, allowing them to be more active in their daily life, reducing social isolation, and it helped improve their ability to participate in new activities.
AFS Tournament
