Dear Pinewood Families & Friends,

Our hearts are heavy and our efforts to help are strong as we witness the unthinkable devastation to the people of Turkey and Syria after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck these two countries on Monday.

Almost immediately, our students expressed their desire to help, so we are working presently on the most beneficial way to be of service to those in dire need.
On behalf of everyone at Pinewood, I wish to send our deepest thoughts and hopes to Pinewood families who are affected, directly or indirectly, by this humanitarian tragedy.

Please find below more information about how you can help.

Pinewood and Anatolia College will join the initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki to collect the following items:
  • Medical supplies: bandages, gauze, antiseptics, pain relievers, first aid boxes, sterile solutions, masks, gloves, etc.
  • Clothing: warm clothes for adults and children, blankets, winter jackets, etc
  • Baby products: powdered milk, baby food, wet wipes, diapers, bottles, etc.
  • Non-perishable food items: canned food, energy bars, instant noodles, condensed milk, nuts
  • Hygiene supplies: soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, towels, etc.
You can bring your donations to the reception area of the Elementary or Secondary campus. We will collect and sort the gifts and bring them to the Thessaloniki town hall, where collections from all over the city are being gathered.

Please note that you can also make a monetary donation to a reputable disaster relief organization that has established channels for delivering aid to those affected. This TIME article, for example, provides an overview of various well-known charities and the areas they focus on.

With their 7th graders, Dr. Ourania Chatsiou and Ms. Helen Dalakas focused on the genre of personal narrative with the reading of the first chapter of Maya Angelou’s autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in which she establishes her powerful voice against racial discrimination and inequality. Using this as a springboard, students were introduced to the history of racism, the Civil Rights Movement, and the current global situation regarding race relations in the United States. Grade 8 - Math Fair visit
On February 7, Grade 8 visited the Math Fair at the International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki. Our students had the opportunity to travel to Ancient Greece, Egypt, and other great civilizations that helped mathematics become what it is today. They  participated in mathematical operations as these were done thousands of years ago, and they drew on sand exactly as Euclid did with his students back in the 4th century BC, trying to answer such questions as:
  • How did they calculate the distance between Earth and the moon?
  • How can I measure the height of an object so tall that I cannot reach it?
  • How far away is New York City from Athens?
Grade 4 - Physical Science
In their unit about Physical Science, grade 4 students explored matter through a hands-on experiment. To further advance their conceptual understanding of the physical properties of matter, they dissolved sugar into water and mixed it with sand in order to test how ingredients can be separated through filtration and reverse osmosis.
Grade 9 and 11: Personality & Career Inventory
As they enter High School, the question of what to study and where this would lead careerwise is increasingly featured as one of the students' priorities. To support them on this journey, Pinewood provided Grade 9 and 11 students with the opportunity to complete two psychometric tests. These tests were administered through the established Orientum - Career Guidance Counselors company which has already helped more than 10.000 high school and university students decide on their academic and career choices.

The first test was a trait personality questionnaire and the second test determined the professional categories a student might be interested in, or not. The assessment was followed by individual follow-up sessions so that each student could go through his/her results with one of our psychologists, with one of the ACT students majoring in psychology, or with a Pinewood teacher.
