BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Our continued engagement with history is vital for our students. Black History Month is an opportunity to understand Black peoples' indelible imprint on world history, spotlight achievements, and frame a context for the present. It also provides a vehicle for racial transformation forever.

Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States.

Each week this month, our Language and Literature Department will highlight teaching units created by our teachers and taught to students during the year to tackle the invaluable work of understanding black history in the U.S. and beyond.

For more information about Black History Month, visit the Library of Congress.

Roxanne Giampapa,
Head of School
Ms. Darya Kostikina and Ms. Andromachi Lenou specifically planned their 8th-grade Language & Literature classes with Black History Month in mind. While working on their literary unit on Maya Angelou's iconic memoir,  I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the 8th graders learnt about where Black History Month began, doing research on famous Black people in a number of disciplines throughout history.

The students played a jeopardy-style game at the end of class which quizzed them on these people. Next, as they segue to their Argumentative Writing unit next week, they will re-examine MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech through the lens of argumentation--focusing on ethos, pathos, and logos in particular. They will also examine Barack Obama’s 2004 Democratic National Convention Keynote Address and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "Why We Should All Be Feminists" as further examples of argumentation before students choose their own topics to write persuasive essays on. Lastly, students will watch  The Great Debaters, a movie depicting the true story behind the Wiley College (an HBCU) first-ever debate team as it takes on Harvard in the national championship of debate.

Scholarships awarded for exceptional summer school
Each year, thousands of students from all over the world enter the famous Immerse Education Essay Competition in the hopes of winning one of the coveted 100% scholarship places.

This year four of our Pinewood Students have been awarded scholarships for attending a Cambridge or Oxford summer school through the renowned Immerse Education Essay Competition!

They have worked hard to submit their original individual essays and their selection is not related to one another. They competed against just over 10.000 applicants in a competition that is at the forefront of scholarship opportunities worldwide. Their writing skills have now earned them a prize that serves as a passport to a bright future!

Elementary Library Update
In Pinewood, we all know that Books create warm emotional bonds between adults and kids when they read books together. Books help kids develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies—much more than any other media.

In light of our Operation Kindness and Valentine's Day, our Elementary Librarian Ms. Helen Fillipidou has created a list of recommended books. Enjoy!

We invite EY and Elementray parents to complete the Survey for our new campus. Your opinion is valuable as a school partner and your feedback is part of the assessment and continued progress of our transition to the new campus.  The survey is confidential. No names or emails are collected.
