Pinewood at the Aegean Tournament
Last week, 15 schools from Thessaloniki, Athens, and Larissa took part in the Aegean Tournament. For four consecutive days, more than 720 participants competed in basketball, football, and volleyball games.

Congratulations to our boys volleyball team, girls volleyball team, and boys basketball team for their participation and sportsmanship! Our cheerleaders and spectators did a great job encouraging our teams. A big thank you to our coaches Ms. Koumpli and Mr.  Kakaroudis
MYP Community Project
Pinewood’s 9th and 10th grade students (MYP 2 and MYP 3) have been actively engaging in the Community Project Service as Action Initiative. Participation in the Community Project gives students an opportunity to develop an awareness of a need within their community and to address this need through an action of service. Below is a sample of what service as action our students will be engaging in:
  • Creating an informational website about local shelter dogs with the goal of adoption
  • Collecting money to donate to children that are war victims
  • Helping young people addicted to screens
  • Raising awareness about restaurant food waste
  • Assisting upcoming artists to share their art
  • Creating a social media campaign about environmental awareness

Two of our Pinewood students have been shortlisted in the top 10 (placing 4th in ranking) for the next round of the Innovator Competitionan international high school entrepreneurship competition sponsored by the Jacobson Institute, which is part of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.

Marios Katzigkas (G10) and Alexandros Mentesidis (G10) came up with the business idea of Sleek, a smart trash can that aims to remove all the hassle and annoyance of dealing with trash.   They developed this as part of our Entrepreneurship class last year, but remained attached to it and wanted to move it forward to prototyping. They are currently working on physically creating Sleek in their IoT (Internet of Things) class, a great example of the power and potential of interdisciplinary learning.

Let's wish them luck as they pitch for a place in the Top Three next week - and the possibility of securing a financial prize to support their plan to develop this into a business!

Pinewood’s Secondary Art after school club, has prepared a series of Winter cards designs to celebrate the festive season! Middle school and high school students have created small artworks which became the cover for our festive cards. The cards will be used to raise funds for the local children’s organization, "CHILDREN’S HEARTS" which supports kids who are fighting severe congenital heart diseases.

The cards come in a set of 2 and cost 5 Euros. They will be available from Monday, December 12, at the Secondary and Elementary reception desks.

Wish Star Initiative

Make-A-Wish Greece grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. They collect donations through the Wish Star program.

By simply donating 2 euros for a Wish Star, you receive a paper star, which in turn becomes a star of love, thus making the life of a sick child full of light and hope!

You can buy your star at the Elementary and Secondary reception until the end of December!
The Joy Project

Pinewood Elementary students chose to support the 'Initiative For The Child'. This organization gets custody of abused/neglected children after a prosecutor's order or a court decision and raises them in a family atmosphere. The organization was developed with Niarchos and Laskarides funds and they won the Hyatt Community Grants award in 2016. The children are currently living at  Vergina House, a family-run hostel for the long-term accommodation of children at risk.
Elementary students will prepare a gift and a card dedicated to each one of the 45 children that the organisation accommodates. Our after-school jewelry club, and art club students are also preparing artistic gifts for the children.
As winter finally arrived in Thessaloniki, we want to introduce Alpis Ski Club, a not-for-profit ski club that provides ski lessons for children aged 4 to 14, and race training for young ski athletes.

Lessons start on Friday, January 6, and continue until the end of the season. Click on the button below for more information about the program.

Ms. Tuba Uslu, a Pinewood parent, is helping with the organization of the ski lessons. You can contact her if you have any questions.
The third session from the NESA Parents as Partners 2022-2023 Fall webinars: Manage Your Family’s Screen-Time So It Doesn’t Manage You! with Joy Marchese took place yesterday, December 6. Click the below button to watch the recording.
