You’re One in 8 Billion

info@pinewood.gr
I have just finished an article about the world population reaching a record 8 billion people according to estimates from the United Nations. To help us understand how each of us fits into a world of 8 billion people, I thought it interesting that The Washington Post  created an interactive experience using demographic data that you can customize by age, country, and gender.

I have shared it with our teachers and I share it with you, too, to encourage you to find out where you stand in this moment -  and where the world is headed in terms of population. I was shocked to learn that 80% of the world is younger than me! What will you be surprised to learn?

Check below the interactive article.

ESA Moon Camp competition
info@pinewood.gr

The Artemis I mission lifted off on Wednesday, November 16 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This is the first spaceflight in NASA's Artemis program. During the next missions of the program, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon and establish the first long-term presence there.

Pinewood students are preparing for this exciting new era! Thirty-four 8th graders working in six teams are participating in the European Space Agency's Moon Camp Explorers Challenge. They will work during their MYP Product Design lessons with their teacher Mr. Kosmidis to design their own Moon Settlement using 3D modeling software. Their project should be adapted to the Moon environment, make use of local resources, and provide food, energy, protection, and water to the astronauts. Following the Design Cycle, they have already completed their research and will move on to the development of ideas and creation of the settlement. Participating teams from all over the world will compete for the ESA Moon Camp Explorers prize for the best project that will be announced in June! Stay tuned!

Pinewood already has a history of supporting students to explore their scientific interests in creative ways.

Back in 1994, the first aerospace student club was formed by 17 Pinewood students with an interest in space exploration throughout history. This desire to explore science and technology outside of the classroom is present across generations and demonstrates one of Pinewood's strengths and values: cultivating curious and creative minds.
Early Years students had messy play fun

The early-year students had the most wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in Messy Play! A team from the Messy Play activity center, set up the most wonderful discovery area in our art studio. They brought in huge mounds of clay for building and creating, trays of oobleck waiting to be explored, and heaps of colored sand, rice, and soil for digging. The philosophy behind Messy Play is to foster curiosity, imagination, and exploration. There are no boundaries and the children are able to fully enjoy the sensory benefits of the materials. It certainly was an amazing experience and the students even got to build their own school from clay.
Charity bake sale - Elementary
info@pinewood.gr
Our Elementary Student Council representatives recently held a charity bake sale for a non-for-profit organization in Veroia and Vergina 'Πρωτοβουλία για το παιδί' (Initiative For The Child, established in 2008). Students in grades 1 to 6 uncovered how initiatives like this inspire us to look beyond the sweets, to some lasting learning opportunities. The three-day event was an exploration of building empathy through sharing and doing something kind not only for the people who enjoyed the treats but also for the people who will receive the donation. When preparing the items, they used their creativity in baking, decorating, and packaging them. They also practiced math skills while shopping and measuring out ingredients for the recipes, and selling the treats (giving change). We are so thankful and proud of our ESC reps!
