Pinewood Annual Fall Board Meeting

I just returned from the annual Fall Board meeting in Boston, Massachusetts where I provided our Board members with an update on progress around Pinewood’s growth and development. It was a positive, productive meeting wherein Board members showed their continued support for Pinewood’s construction plans, educational programs, and future goals.

I am also pleased to announce that 2 Board members have donated full scholarships for 2 Ukrainian students to attend Pinewood for 3 and 4 years respectively. These students, who were forced to leave their homes last Spring due to the war in their country, will now benefit from a Pinewood education.

#PINEWOOD ALUMNUS
While in Boston, I also had the opportunity to meet up with a Pinewood alumnus, Harry Mantziaris ’21, who is currently a sophomore at Bentley University.

For new families, please see a description of our Board of Trustees below:

Pinewood is governed by a Board of Trustees with headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. Approximately half of the Trustees reside in the New England region while most of the remainder represent other areas of the United States and Greece.

Distinguished for their professional accomplishments in the areas of law, business, education, philanthropy and scholarship, Pinewood Board members are all volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to supporting the institution. Pinewood and Anatolia trustees meet twice a year, once in Boston and once in Thessaloniki.

The Board's primary goals are to ensure that Pinewood remains fiscally sound and continues to provide exemplary educational programs for the American and international communities in Greece, ones of which its students and their parents, faculty, staff, and graduates can be proud.

Ceramics for Visual Art students
info@pinewood.gr
Visual Art students went on a highly successful field trip to a pottery workshop in Lakkia. Students got an insight into the ways clay can be prepared, sculpted, and fired to become a ceramic.
We will marvel at their work in our annual  IB Art Exhibition in March!
Experiments at Pinewood

Grade 4 students explored the water cycle with two hands-on experiments. In the first one, they saw how the desalination of water can take place. In the second one, they tested how a cloud is created by having vapor particles mixing with dust particles and getting denser in the troposphere above heated water. The students loved the hands-on experiments and look forward to the next topic.
Dancing with Charcoal

Grade 3 art class just finished their unit: "Drawing with charcoal". With Ms. Ornella they began by discussing and exploring what charcoal was and its mark-making qualities. As a final project, they looked at a collection of video recordings of artist Heather Hansen, dancing with charcoal. They discussed how they could use their bodies as a drawing tool to make drawings inspired by movement and then practiced it themselves!

Thanksgiving Feast
info@pinewood.gr

Thanksgiving is a longstanding Pinewood tradition that, due to Covid, we were not able to hold. For the new families who are joining us this year, the tradition is that the parents and students cook for the feast.

For elementary, the room parent representatives will be getting in touch soon with more information on what type of food your grade level has been assigned and how you can help out with this tradition by setting up, serving, and cleaning up.

Celebrating the true spirit of Thanksgiving as an American school, and in line with our focus on building and strengthening relationships, Secondary students will be feasting together, offering thanks for all the joys and blessings life has bestowed upon us.

Students in Grade 3, have put on their explorers' hats and dived into reading nonfiction, studying the Amazon rainforest, and doing research on extreme weather phenomena. Their focus will be on the changes in the tropical ecosystems affecting the flora and fauna, as well as on the impact human activities and development have on sustainability and ecology. The knowledge acquired by working on this unit will be used in their transdisciplinary projects on ''Where we are in Place and Time'' and the 17 Sustainable Development Golas of the United Nations.
