Pinewood Living History
Last week we were fortunate enough to have 4 special guests in the Elementary who also watched our OXI celebration. On that day we placed the special Pinewood honorary marble inscription in front of our Elementary building. The marble was initially placed in the Pinewood school located in the same location in 1950 and finally has returned back home!
In the photo above, we have Pinewood's living history from 1954 to the present!
Left to right: Mr. Nikos Tsachtanis (36 years and going), Ms. Carolyn Tzimoulis (27 years as a student and as an employee), Mr. Peter Baiter (former Director 22 years), Mr. Tony Tzimoulis (former Board President 17 years and father of Ms. Tzimoulis), Ms. Ismene Ioannidou (former Elementary teacher 32 years), and Ms. Amalia Spiliakou (former Elem/Sec teacher 25 years).
MSA re-accreditation visit
On November 11 and 12, the MSA representatives Dr. Priscilla Feir, MSA Associate Vice President, and Mr. Heath Capello, Upper School Assistant Principal, American School of Milan, will be visiting Pinewood to review and renew our accreditation
During their visit, the MSA team will review our Self-Study Report, observe school operations, and meet with students, parents, teachers, and leadership. Once the visit is completed, the team will provide us with observations, recommendations, monitoring issues, and stipulations as relevant for each of the 12 standards.
#CallToEarth project
Third-grade students at Pinewood American International School of Thessaloniki, during their Who We Are TDL unit, discussed sustainability and ways that we can promote it in our community as we work to create awareness and grow global citizens. Our goal is to focus on the environmental pillar of sustainable development to protect the planet and human life within our little school community and beyond. By sharing this project with the world, our little third graders achieve a greater goal which is to raise awareness about sustainable solutions and contribute to changing the mindset of as many people as possible. If we manage to make sustainability part of people's culture, our global community will be in good hands. This is only one of the children's projects which focuses on saving the oceans.
STEAM lesson at Elementary
Here is a sneak peek of a STEAM lesson in our brand new design studio at Elementary Pinewood in the Anatolia campus. Students experimented with designing and testing different structures for a cable car, aiming to safely transfer two passengers and a dog down a mountain. They are learning methods that will help them find novel and useful solutions to a particular problem, be it in interaction design, graphics, or code. It is not a magic creativity machine, but when they learn to put themselves in this creative mental state, new and exciting things happen!
Pinewood at the Globalization Forum

Our G10 Global Perspectives students, along with the IB2 Economics students, participated in a Globalisation Forum. Each one of the G10 students presented and analyzed a news article on a critical globalization topic. The IB2 Economics students acted as expert members of an economic committee, whose role is to assess the economic perspective, provide useful feedback and make suggestions as to how economic analysis can be improved. A big 'thank-you' to all our students and our teachers, Mr. Katsetos (G10) and Mr. Nigdelis (IB2 Economics), for organizing this challenging event.

Grade 2 visit to Bissell

Grade 2 visited the Bissell Library as part of their Art course with Ms. Ornella. They carefully observed the paintings of artist Sotos Zachariadis who painted the same scene in many different ways. It was fascinating to see how one scene could be interpreted so differently. The students then chose a painting to do an observational drawing.

Better Internet for Kids portal
info@pinewood.gr
Safety on the internet is more important now than ever before, as children use devices and have access to the web at younger and younger ages. The Better Internet for Kids portal, is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers, and students, launched in 2016 on behalf of the European Commission. In Greece, it offers three channels of support: A website with articles and tips about online safety, a helpline available during working hours, and a hotline for reporting illegal content and conduct on the internet.
Call for Used Books

As part of our re-use campaign, we are collecting gently used books for our hall libraries.

If your child has outgrown some of their books and they are still in good shape, donate them to Pinewood. We are looking for books for ages 3-12. If you are an EY or elementary parent, you can drop your donations off with Ms. Carolyn in the receptionist's office.

If you are a secondary parent, you can drop your donations off with Ms. Dimitra at the secondary building.

Pinewood re-usable bottles distributed!
“Every time someone refills a bottle rather than throws a plastic one away, we are reducing the amount of plastic that reaches the ocean,”. At Pinewood, we raise awareness for pollution, its causes, and its results and encourage students to reuse and recycle. Our elementary students have received their pinewood water bottles as part of our sustainability month project. Our Secondary students will receive their bottles tomorrow, Thursday.
