NESA FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

info@pinewood.gr
The NESA Fall Leadership Conference, from which I just returned, is an annual event for leaders in international schools in our region. It attracts some of the best thought leaders in their fields to present and engage in valuable conversations relevant to education.

This year’s conference, held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, was an opportunity for the Pinewood leadership team to visualize the future of education and transformation. Here is a snapshot of keynotes from the conference with links to learn more about the speaker and her/his work.

School Coherence: Shaping conscious influencers in our communities

Said El Kadi, HARVARD UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Fun fact: He is only a freshman at Harvard and he went to an international school very similar to Pinewood.

Said El Kadi is a voice of the current youth generation whose keynote offered an evaluation of what we want to bring through the ‘pandemic portal’ and what we want to leave behind. Click HERE for more.

Courageous Discomfort: How to have hard conversations with skill, capacity and dignity

Rosalind Wiseman, CO-FOUNDER, CULTURES OF DIGNITY

Fun Fact: Her New York Times bestselling book, Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World, was the basis for the movie Mean Girls

Rosalind Wiseman shared how strengthened emotional capacity and relationships can guide us in creating cultures of dignity in our schools. Click HERE for more.

The Collective Journey to Maintain a Goldilocks Climate and Our Role as Educators

Peter Kelly-Detwiler, PRINCIPAL & CONSULTANT, NORTHBRIDGE ENERGY PARTNERS

Fun Fact: He would only travel to the conference if the organizers offset his carbon emissions from his flight. They did it HERE.

Peter Kelly-Detwiler’s keynote discussed the causes and challenges of the climate dynamic and how addressing climate change and instability can play out in the educational setting, potentially leading to a more integrated approach to learning and living. Click HERE for more.

Leveraging Intercultural Competency to Drive Inclusion and Belonging Across NESA Schools

Derrick Gay, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION STRATEGIST

Fun Fact: He has an outstanding TEDTalk about diversity called, The Double-Edged Sword

Derrick Gay’s keynote leveraged the Intercultural Competency model to facilitate the design of actions to foster inclusion and belonging. Click HERE for more.

A21 WALK FOR FREEDOM

The yearly A21 walk has evolved to be a signature event for our Pinewood community. Again, this past Sunday more than 90 Pinewood students and teachers walked for all who cannot. We walked for the thousands of people - men, women, and children - who live and/or work in conditions of exploitation and human trafficking in our country. Our goal is to spread the message: "Live with freedom and report this crime''.

You can find here an article about the walk (Google translation).

BEACH CLEANING

More than 100 Pinewood and Anatolia students, parents, faculty, and staff gathered to support the beach cleaning initiative, which was part of the international coastal cleanup campaign. The Pylaia/Chortiatis mayor attended the event and praised our effort.
We managed to raise awareness about the protection of the marine environment and, at the same time, collect many kilos of garbage, and we made the area plastic free in just a couple of hours!
GRADE 2 STUDENT PROJECT
info@pinewood.gr
Nestor Brychak from Grade 2A has been working on an interesting and unique project in Genius Hour, a 'Time Capsule' for the children of the future. He collected objects that children like today in 2022 along with a photo and letter. He then put them in a bottle to be opened in 2030. He worked out that he will be 15 years old when it's time to open the bottle!!
ROOM PARENTS IN ACTION
In preparation for our Halloween event, coming up this Saturday, our Room Parents Council is doing a brilliant job crafting decorations, and we are so proud of the family spirit of our community! Join our Trick or Treat party festivities and have a memorable evening at school; we cannot wait!
OXI DAY PREPARATIONS
info@pinewood.gr
What an inspiring lesson our grade 4 students had with our music teacher, Ms Eva. Learning the lyrics to the songs for the OXI Day Celebrations and at the same time learning about the context of this historical event as part of the local intangible cultural heritage. If multiple people talk at once, the meaning of each individual line can be lost; whereas if multiple people sing at once, especially in harmony, the meaning of each individual line is heightened and strengthened by being united with others. This is the beauty of being part of our international community, the beauty of singing in unity.

The conference organized by the Kassandra Center for Educational Excellence aims to highlight the recently increased obligations of the modern teacher, who is called upon to support the progress of students, not only in terms of their mental development and the acquisition of 21st-century skills but also their social-emotional cultivation, as prerequisites for overall well-being.

Andreas Schleicher (Director of Education and Skills, and special advisor for education policy of the Secretary-General at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris) will deliver the keynote speech, focusing on students’ 21st-century skills. Following a roundtable discussion about the importance of cultivating a well-being climate for the whole school community, participants will have the opportunity to attend one of the relevant workshops offered.

The workshop is addressed to teachers, professors, school psychologists, university students of pedagogy and psychology, researchers, and executives of the educational community.
