Pinewood Accreditation: What is it?
Accreditation is one of the principal factors in determining the quality of PK-12 schools and universities. Accredited schools are those who demonstrate a systematic process of justifying their existence, establish a vision of their future, and implement a continual and multi-year improvement plan.
For more than 35 years, Pinewood has been fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) in the United States through a rigorous cycle of re-accreditation. This year, Pinewood is fulfilling its regular 7-year re-accreditation process with MSA. |
An important part of this process is a self-study of the 12 standards for accreditation. These 12 standards are:
1. Mission
2. Governance and Leadership
3. School Improvement Planning
4. Finances
5. Facilities
6. School Organization and Staff
7. Health and Safety
8. Educational Programs
9. Assessment and Evidence of Student Learning
10. Student Service
11. Student Life and Student Activities
12. Information Resources
In order to evaluate our level in each standard, we invited parents, students, faculty, and staff to complete an anonymous survey last Spring to help inform the writing of our self-study report. After submitting our self-study, we will host a visiting team from the United States in November.
For the next few weeks, I will share different aspects of our re-accreditation process. In doing so, the goals are to include you in the process, provide awareness of the value of accreditation, and encourage you to always share your thoughts and opinions with us.

BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE, BE SCHOLARLY
Last week our elementary students met in an assembly to discuss the expectations we have been learning about occupying and utilizing our new building and playground. The teachers spent the first two weeks explicitly teaching these expectations. The expectations are based on 4 founding principles: ` Please ask your child how they were safe, respectful, responsible or scholarly at school.

VISITING THE ELEMENTARY CAMPUS
If parents come to the school during the school day, please be sure to check in with Ms. Carolyn at the front entrance (room 101). Please do not just walk directly into the school. There are signs posted to show you the way to the reception office.
ELEMENTARY CELL PHONE POLICY
Cell phones are not to be used by students during the school day. This means that, if your child brings their cell phone to school, it should be turned off and in their backpack between 8:20 and 16:10.
If a child is seen with their cell phone out and is using it during the school day, it will be confiscated by the teacher and returned at the end of the school day. If a child needs to call their parents, they should inform their teacher and they will determine if a call is necessary.

GRADE 11 - OVERNIGHT TRIP TO XANTHI AND KAVALA
Students enjoyed their walks in the old town of Xanthi, admiring all the "Archontika" that remain in the area. Next, they had a tour of the House of Shadows, an artistic concept of using recyclable materials and projecting them on the wall, creating images, stories, and faces from famous people. The archaeological museums of Avdera and Porto Lagos were two enlightening stops in history and nature. Last but not least, they visited Kavala and had the chance to walk up and enjoy the sunshine.

GRADE 7 - OVERNIGHT TRIP TO VOLOS
The trip to Volos was a joyful experience for our 7 graders. They were introduced to the seaside city of Volos, where they got to explore the city. The tour at the brick factory taught them a lot about this unique material and its roots. The students loved and appreciated the beauty of Portaria and Makrynitsa. They took many photos and enjoyed every moment while meandering through the picturesque alleys and squares. Of course, their visit also included shopping for traditional Greek products.
